Mission & Vision

Mission

Our team of dedicated teachers and leaders, working in a high performance and caring culture, maintaining an intense focus on high quality instruction, and performance outcomes. Students find success, and are engaged through differentiated learning, which allows students to work at their own pace and learn in a manner suited to their own personal strengths. We hold high expectations for students and staff, and believe teachers have an important role in the education of all students.

Vision

Yolanda Black Navarro Middle School prepares students for college and 2035 competencies. Through differentiated learning and a focus on critical thinking skills, closing the achievement gap and allowing every student to reach their potential.

Honoring Our Namesake

At Navarro Middle School, we proudly carry the name of Yolanda Black Navarro, a beloved Houston leader whose life’s work centered on education, community service, and social justice. Born and raised in Houston’s East End, Yolanda dedicated her life to uplifting families through civic engagement, advocacy, and acts of compassion. She founded the Shoes for Kids program, co-founded the Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans (AAMA), and served on numerous city boards to improve opportunities for Houston’s underserved communities.

Renaming our campus in her honor reflects our commitment to the values she lived by—equity, empowerment, and excellence. Each day, we strive to inspire our students with Yolanda’s legacy, encouraging them to become leaders who create positive change in their own communities.

By learning about Yolanda Black Navarro’s remarkable contributions, our students understand that one person’s dedication can impact thousands of lives, and they are reminded that they, too, have the power to leave a lasting legacy.
